Islamabad, July 22: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said that his country’s relations with India were stabilising due to intervention by the international community.
However, Gen Musharraf said the security situation in the region was “very tense due to deployment of nearly a million troops by India along the international border, the LoC and the Working Boundary in Kashmir. War does not resolve problems but creates them. Therefore, we have called upon India to resume bilateral dialogue to address all disputes,” he said. President assured India that Pakistan would not initiate a war, but would “respond resolutely” if subjected to aggression. He also said nuclear weapons were merely a deterrent. “Their use is unthinkable. We should not even discuss this possibility.” In an interview to a Saudi Arabian newspaper Al-Watan which was published yesterday, Gen Musharraf reiterated the need for a meaningful dialogue between India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir issue in line with the wishes of the Kashmiris. He said the only way to resolve the Kashmir issue was to allow its people to exercise their right to self-determination.
