Indians in the United States received the news of terrorist attack on Indian Parliament with shock, disbelief and outrage and most of them expressed the view that the government should follow a more proactive policy to wipe out terrorism. Several non-resident Indians said that it would be impossible to fight terrorism without destroying their bases.
They were convinced that the terrorists belonged to fundamentalists terrorist groups based in Pakistan with one of them asking, “Who else would blow himself up?” Some expressed hope that US President George W Bush would follow through his promise to fight terrorism till it is wiped out from the world.
President of the Indian National Overseas Congress Surinder Malhotra expressed outrage at the attack, saying, “It was an attack on the secular values that India holds dear since independence and aimed at instilling fear.”
He said, “The terrorists wanted to send a message by attacking Parliament of the largest democracy in the world.”
“India has been fighting terrorism for more than two decades. To eliminate terrorism, it is necessary to root out the bases (of terrorists) where they are trained,” he said. Bureau Report
