Kozhikode, Sept 22: Accusing the UDF government in Kerala of protecting the accused in the May 2 Marad violence that claimed nine lives, the relatives of the victims today returned the compensation sum of rs.One lakh each to the government demanding that a CBI probe be ordered into the incident immediately. A protest march, organised by the 'Hindu Aikya Vedi,' a forum comprising 42 Hindu organisations, in which a large number of women participated, was taken out to the district collectorate before the victims' relatives handed over the cheques to the collector, T O Sooraj.

Inaugurating the march, Vedi state president, J Sisupalan said what the affected families wanted from the government was not mere financial compensation but a CBI probe to "unravel the truth" behind the incident.
Charging the Muslim League, the second largest partner in the ruling UDF, with protecting the accused in the case, he said that the Vedi would not rest until the probe was ordered and the "realb culprits" were brought to book.

The opposition LDF was also shedding "crocodile tears" on the issue and surprisingly both the fronts in the state had come together to press for rehabilitation in the area without paving the way for a CBI investigation, he said.

Along with the relatives of eight of the nine victims, those of the injured also returned the compensation sum of Rs.2000 each to the collector. Those killed in the violence included a member of the minority community.
