Kolkata, Aug 02: Commonwealth Games gold medal winning pugilist Md Ali Qamar was today presented Rs one lakh by Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh for his superb performance in Manchester last year. In the absence of Qamar, who was now undergoing training in Taskhent for the coming Athens Olympics, his mother Sehnaj Akhteri Begum received the cheque and a citation from Singh at the Mahajati Sadan here.
"I am happy to honour the young boxer, who came up all on his own from a very modest background. I wish him further success at international arena," Singh said.
Qamar won the light flyweight gold medal beating England's Darren Langley in the Commonwealth Games.
