Chandigarh, Sept 21: Seeking to project construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya as a national cause, BJP today said the issue concerned not only the party and the Sangh Parivar but the faith of crores of people in the country. "Several people including friends from the media ask me if BJP will make the Ram temple an issue in the coming polls, but I clarify that it is not just the BJP, RSS or VHP who want the temple to be constructed...Crores of people in this country want it to happen," party general secretary Pramod Mahajan said addressing party workers here.
Lashing out at those who sought proof that Lord Ram was born at the disputed site in Ayodhya, he said, "Now even the Archaeological Survey of India report has proved that a temple existed at the site."
Mahajan said that it would be of great benefit to the parties concerned if the issue was amicably resolved. "We are in favour of the issue being resolved through talks." He said that the court's decision on the temple issue would help clear up things.
Later, in a brief chat with reporters on the issue of Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi's resignation following the Rae Bareli special court's decision to frame charges against him in the Babri Masjid demolition case, Mahajan said the ball was now in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's court and only he could decide on it once he returned from abroad.
Earlier, highlighting the achievements of the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, Mahajan said, "The Vajpayee government has changed the face of this country during its five year term, a feat which the successive Congress regimes could not achieve during over four decades of their rule." He said that when Vajpayee became the Prime Minister in 1998, only three crore people had gas connections while 3.55 crore new connections were added during the last five years of NDA rule.
"By 2010, an estimated 10 crore people will have mobile phones and 1.75 crore people are having this facility now. We are ushering in a communication revolution," the former communication minister said. Bureau Report
