Indian Railways' Engineering Marvel: Country’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge Set To Boost Connectivity
The newly constructed Pamban Bridge which costs Rs 535 crores, connects Mandapam to Rameswaram Island. Featuring 100 spans and a 63-meter navigational span, it enhances train speed and facilitates ship passage. The bridge attracts tourists and pilgrims visiting the Ramanathaswamy Temple.
The Indian Railways has unveiled the Pamban Bridge, a remarkable engineering feat built by Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd (RVNL), a PSU under Indian Railways. If a ship needs to pass under the bridge, it must coordinate with the maritime department, which then works with Railways to grant permission. During this time, train operations will halt for about two hours.
Connectivity
The Pamban Bridge connects Mandapam, a town in mainland India, with Pamban Island and Rameswaram.
The new bridge features 100 spans, each measuring 18.3 meters, along with one 63-meter navigational span. It will be 3 meters higher than the existing bridge, providing a navigational air clearance of 22 meters above sea level.
Electro-Mechanical Controlled Systems
According to ANI, M. Dinesh, the Electrical Engineer of Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL), stated that, unlike the existing manual operation, the new bridge uses an electro-mechanical control system, integrated with train control systems. Additionally, a counterweight mechanism is implemented to operate the bridge, reducing electricity consumption.
The full horizontal width of 63 meters will be available for navigation.

The sea bridge, built by RVNL at a cost of Rs 535 crores, will enable Indian Railways to operate trains at higher speeds.
