Rome, Nov 28: Employees of Italy's national air carrier Alitalia are staging a four-hour strike today, causing the cancellation of 195 flights, the company said. Some 25,500 passengers travelling on 109 domestic and 86 international flights will be disrupted by the action starting at 1130 GMT. Around 150 extra flights will be re-routed.

The strike is aimed at reaffirming the employees' "strong opposition to the business plan proposed by the company's management," said a statement by Alitalia's trade unions. The state-controlled airline has adopted a broad restructuring plan that calls for 1,500 job cuts in non-core activities and a 1.2-billion-euro (1.4 billion dollar) investment to renew its fleet.
