Angolan Unita rebels have released 60 orphans whom they kidnapped near the town of Caxito earlier this month, the church-run radio Ecclesia reported, quoting the government. ``All the released children are alive and healthy and are under FAA (Angolan army) protection,`` said radio Ecclesia on Friday quoting the government which said that 60 orphans had been freed.
Government sources told a United Nations official that Angolan armed forces (FAA) had been chasing the rebels for two weeks in the bush since the initial attack. The children were released after a battle in the northern province of Uige.
In a statement issued in Lisbon and received in Luanda, Unita, which denies kidnapping the orphans, said 57 children who had ``strayed from the attack on Caxito`` were handed to the catholic mission in Ambaca in Uige on Friday.
