Imphal, May 30: Normal life was crippled at the border town of Jiribam today during a 33-hour 'Jiribam bandh' to protest security excesses, official reports said. Markets, shops, government offices and other institutions remained closed in view of the bandh which began yesterday.

Reports said Jiribam merchant association which called the bandh would decide the future course of action if the harassment and torture of innocent civilians were not stopped by the security forces in the name of hunting for insurgents.

Reports said local social organisations had complained to the government authorities at the border town that several civilians were harassed and tortured by the security forces after some militants attacked an Army post at Jiribam, 222 kms from here, about two weeks ago.

No senior security official was available for comment.
