Guwahati, Dec 09: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said that the state government had never allowed Ulfa to hold the state to ransom, but had intensified operations under the unified command causing severe reverses to the outfit. Refuting allegations by Bihar leader of opposition Sushil Kumar Modi that the Assam government had been soft towards the Ulfa, Gogoi said in a statement from New Delhi that the BJP leader was making wild allegations to gain political mileage by winning the sympathy of the Biharis in Assam. He said that the state government had taken stern action against those who perpetrated the attacks on the Biharis in the state along with law enforcers for their lapses.
The government had lost no time in providing compensation to the victims of attacks despite financial constraints. ''Looking after the well-being of the Biharis living in Assam is the responsibility of the state government and we are fully committed to ensure this'', Gogoi added. Modi had accused the state government at a press conference here yesterday that the congress government in the state had a pact with the Ulfa and was soft on them. Bureau Report
