Patna, Feb 26: Alleging 'political vendetta' as the reason behind the recommendation of Medical Council of India (MCI) derecognising five state-run medical colleges in Bihar, the state government today decided to approach the Supreme Court to challenge the decision, if the situation so warranted. State medical education minister Dr Shakeel Ahmad told that the state government took exception to the reported decision of MCI executive committee to recommend derecognition to five out of six medical colleges in Bihar.
The decision to approach the Supreme Court was taken at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rabri Devi. The meeting was also attended by state chief secretary, medical education secretary and Mr Afzal Amanullah.
''The move to derecognise five medical colleges in Bihar is unwarranted and a handiwork of a few doctors from the state who are involved in political activities also, with a view to embarrassing the state government,'' he alleged. Earlier, this month the executive committee of the Medical Council of India recommended derecognition of five medical colleges in the state including the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Srikrishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur and Jayaprakash Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur.
However, no communication had yet been made by MCI about the decision of the executive committee either to the government or to the principals of concerned universities which were affiliated to the colleges, he added.
