Mumbai, Nov 19: American wines are coming to India in a big way to compete with the well-known French and German brands, Counsel General at the US Consulate in Mumbai, Angus Simmons, said here today.
Inaugurating the launch of the first fall festival of US wines and food here, he said until 1997 India had been fairly a closed market for imported food products and remained like that for imported wines and spirits.
However, the trend was now changing and the wine festival was an example of the transformation of US-India bilateral relationship, he said.
India enjoyed USD 810 million surplus with United States in agricultural products in 2002, the Counsel General said, adding that over the past six years US agricultural exports to India had increased by 147 per cent to USD 280 billion in 2002. However, considering India's population and growing middle class, the figure was quite small, he said.
India's growing middle class has embraced a wide array of high quality wines and food products, he said and added that US was delighted to introduce its choices wines and food in Mumbai as part of the festival.
America's leading wine manufacturing companies including Brown-Forman Wines, Constellation Wines, Ernest and Julio Gallo Winery, San Fransisco Wine Cellars, participated in the festival.
Among the leading brands exhibited at the festival were world famous Fetzer, Zellerbach, Paul Masson, William Roan, Novella, EOS, Arbor Mist, Almaden, Vendange and Cook's.
