Commuters in Delhi continued to face a tough time reaching their destinations even as over 1,260 more buses hit the streets providing them some relief following the Supreme Court directive withdrawing all diesel run buses from plying in the city. A Delhi Transport Ministry spokesman said that in addition to 1262 diesel run buses which resumed operation after paying the requisite fine at the rate of Rs 500 per day levied by the Supreme Court, 1,399 more bus owners paid the penalty on Thursday and would be hitting the streets on Friday.
"A total of 7,200 CNG vehicles and 2,661 diesel buses are catering to the requirement of the people and situation would improve further in the coming days," the spokesman said.
The Delhi Government has also placed orders for 1,000 more CNG buses, besides opening of additional counters at the Transport Department to enable the operators to pay up the fine and resume services immediately. Meanwhile, despite the increase in number of buses, large number of commuters were seen waiting endlessly at bus stops across the capital. Many of them opted for the additional electric multiple units being run on the ring railway to reach their destinations. Bureau Report
