Lucknow, Mar 16: Defending the decision to shift Uttar Pradesh BJP president Vinay Katiyar from Faizabad to Lakhimpur Kheri, party state election committee chairman Kalyan Singh today said it was done to add to the strength of the party.
However, Katiyar said he accepted to contest from Kheri ''for a change in his taste.''
''Faizabad is our winning seat and we shifted Katiyar to Kheri so that we can add it in our list,'' Singh told newspersons here today. '' Katiyar has the capability to win the seat from where the BJP has not won in the past,'' he added.
Meanwhile, Katiyar here denied that he shifted to Kheri due to apprehension of losing from the Faizabad seat. ''I had supported the decision taken by the party leadership to shift my seat,'' he said, adding he wanted to ''change his taste.''
Further refuting the charges that he was no more concerned about the Ram temple movement in Ayodhya, the former Bagranj Dal president maintained that his fight for a grand temple would continue.
He said Ayodhya BJP MLA Lallu Singh was expected to be the party's candidate from Faizabad and will certainly win the elections.
Claiming that the party central leadership would announce the candidates for all the seats very soon, Kalyan Singh, the former state Chief Minister, said Kalraj Mishra and Rajnath Singh had not been given ticket as they were required for electioneering. He also denied any revolt in the party's Varanasi unit after denial of ticket to Mishra.
On the challenges being put up by the ruling Samajwadi Party to win the Bulandshahr seat from where Singh would be contesting the Lok Sabha polls, he said on May 13 the people will decide the fate of the SP candidate from there.
