Kolkata, Dec 24: Nobel laureate Amartya Sen released a book on the life and works of his father, eminent agriculture and soil scientist Asutosh Sen in a function in Kolkata.
The book titled Prasanga - Asutosh Sen (Theme - Asutosh Sen) is a collection of essays on the childhood, education, career and his work among the farmers to propagate scientific agriculture.
The writers include Amartya Sen, his mother Amita Sen, sister Supurna Dutta, author Nabanita Deb Sen and other relatives besides eminent educationists.
Asutosh Sen, who was associated with the Dhaka University, Mandalay (Erstwhile Burma) Agriculture Department, Land Development, Government of India and UPSC, was fondly remembered by the speakers including former Vice-Chancellor of the Visva-Bharati University Sisir Mukhopadhyay for his outstanding contribution to the field of soil science.
He was also lauded for encouraging farmers to increase production through scientific agriculture and also for his pioneering work in getting water from the dry soil of Birbhum district. He was instrumental in introducing deep tubewell technology in the area.
