Hurriyat Conference is facing mounting pressure from both within and outside the country to participate in the elections and prove its representative character, the amalgam sources said. The first call for their participation in the elections came from none other than Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah.
Abdullah has been speaking at different fora asking them to prove their representative character before speaking on behalf of the people of the state.
Significantly, separatist leaders like Hashim Qureshi, who could be termed as the father of the entire armed conflict in the state, and Shabir Shah, a person termed as Nelson Mandela of Kashmir, have been urging the Hurriyat leaders to participate in the elections.
The announcement of a parallel election commission by the Hurriyat Conference has also come under sharp attack from not only these separatist leaders but also from some constituents of the amalgam.
Though Yaseen Malik, former militant and chief of JKLF, claims that the formation of the Election Commission had the tacit blessing of some thinktanks in the united states, some of the senior American officials have in meeting with Kashmiri outfits denied such reports.
