Ahmedabad, Nov 20: The situation inside the Sabarmati Jail premises, a day after all the inmates ended a two-day hunger strike that was initiated to protest the transfer of ex-superintendent Sanjeev Bhatt, is "absolutely normal" today, official sources said here. "The situation inside the jail is absolutely normal. Also the condition of four inmates, who allegedly attempted suicide last night is stable," newly appointed Jail Superintendent A B Makwana told newspersons.

The injured have been sent to the civil hospital for dressing and further treatment, he said.

One inmate had swallowed some pills, another slashed his wrists while two banged their heads on the wall in their attempts to commit suicide after the hunger strike was called off. Two were rushed to the civil hospital last night.
"The situation in the jail premises would be reviewed before officials consider filing cases of attempt to suicide against the four jail inmates," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Vikas Sahay told news agencies.

Makwana said, "There is no more protest within the jail premises and everything is back on schedule today."

A majority of the 3,000 inmates of Gujarat's biggest central jail had showed unexpected support for outgoing Superintendent Bhatt by sloganeering and calling for an indefinite hunger strike two days ago.

Meanwhile, jail authorities and the state government have been asked to be present at the Gujarat High Court later in the day, in connection with the PIL filed by the inmates challenging Bhatt's transfer.
