New Delhi, Mar 10: ‘What’s cooking good looking’ was the question that all asked as they walked into Chor Bizarre on Saturday night where Renuka Chowdhury, Congress Member of Parliament in the dissolved Lok Sabha decided to don the chef’s hat. Most of the dishes she prepared would be available at all three outlets of Chor Bizarre as a part of the Andhra Food Festival that will on till March 31.
“Uppermost in everybody’s mind is who’s going to wear the hat this time after the elections,” said Chowdhury. Despite spending five hours in the kitchen to prepare food for nearly 80 people, Chowdhury was in high spirits and kept everyone amused with her interesting stories and experiences. For the home-style Andhra food that was served in silver thalis, Chowdhury specially bought red chilli garlic powder and the long, thin Andhra chillies that aren’t available anywhere in the Capital.
Ask as to what got behind the scenes this time, she says, “I enjoy cooking and was planning something like this for a long time. Andhra cuisine has a distinct flavour. Sadly a lot of people tend to confuse it with Hyderabadi food. I’m waiting to hear what my friends thought of having dosa with chicken. But the spices have been tapered down for this meal, as this cuisine is quite hot.”
Spotted at the do were former Home Secretary K. Padmanabiah, Secretary All India Congress Committee Major Dalbir Singh and Devi Cherian engrossed in a conversation. “I have come especially to savour the dishes. In fact Dilip (my husband) has asked me to get some food packed for him,” said Devi. Kuchipudi dancer Kaushalya Reddy, who also hails from Andhra Pradesh, enjoyed the uttapam, fish curry, wadi aloo and fried mirchi the most. “The food was authentic and spicy. In fact, a lot of my friends thought that it was too spicy, but if Renuka had compromised on the spices it wouldn’t have been the same.”
The forthcoming elections seemed to be the hot topic of conversation and sharing a few laughs about it were Chief Income Tax Commissioner, Sikandar Talwar, Malvika Singh of Seminar Education Foundation, vice president, operations and general manager Intercontinental The Grand, Michael D Horsburgh and Dr Siddharth Mehta. TV personality Nalini Singh said, “the food was fabulous.”
Also present were Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Transport), Rajiv Talwar, Vinod Dua, Mala Singh, V George of Congress and MP, T. Subbarami Reddy.
Well, if luck doesn’t favour politicians this time around, they can look at the other career options, cooking being one of them.
