Hyderabad, Oct 04:Favouring innovative laws to cater to the needs of digital economy, President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday called for re-defining jurisdiction in a way that any crime committed against India by `anyone from anywhere' should be punishable by Indian law.
"The legal community must enable formulation of progressive and innovative laws for digital economy that will be one of the vital components of a developed nation," Kalam said while delivering the first convocation address at the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University (NALSAR) at Shamirpet on the outskirts of the city.
Pointing out how the nature of crime was undergoing changes in the digital world, he said "in the digital world, crime may originate from a strange place even outside our own shores and may damage organisational wealth which will be in digital form in multiple locations".
However, in the present law, jurisdiction corresponds to the location where crime is committed and where damage occurs -- very often both being the same location, he said. Bureau Report
