Shillong, May 05: An advisory group of the Union Home Ministry today held discussions with director-general of Assam Rifles, Lt Gen H S Kanwar, on the security situation and issues relating to insurgency in the North-East. The three-member north-east study group, led by S K Agnihotri, praised the Assam Rifles for its efforts in restoring peace and harmony in the region, an AR release said here.

Besides Agnihotri, the other two members of the team were the secretary of Delhi-based national foundation of communal harmony, Lt Gen (Retd) S K Pillai, and former bureaucrat, K Saigal.

The group was set up by the ministry in 2002 to keep security situation in the north-eastern states under constant watch and to recommend suitable measures for remedial actions to the government.
The team would also call on the Meghalaya chief minister, D D Lapang, and hold wide-ranging discussions with the state government, official sources said.
