Riding on Gurpreet Singh's record-shattering encore, hosts Punjab consolidated their position atop the medals tally grabbing two more gold medals in athletic competitions of the 31st National Games in Ludhiana on Saturday.
Gurpreet Singh, who had set a new meet mark in the men's 110m hurdles on Friday, sustained his momentum to break the record in 400m hurdles on Saturday which turned out to be the only high point of an otherwise dull day in the showpiece event at the Guru Nanak Dev stadium.
Gurpreet capitalised on a flying start to complete the one-lap hurdles race clocking 51.66 sec to wipe out Rajeev Balakrishnan's record of 52.15 sec set in the 1994 National Games.
After Friday's high-voltage action which saw as many as six meet records tumble, it turned out to be a rather lacklustre day on Saturday with the standard confined to mediocrity in most of the events.
Barring Gurpreet's brillant effort for the second day in succession, none of the other athletes could make much of an impression and were well behind the National Games mark.
Punjab though kept themselves busy grabbing two of the six gold medals of offer to lead the medals table with a total of six with just one more day of athletic action remaining.
Kerala were in the second position with six gold in their kitty followed by Tamil Nadu with five.
