Dhaka, Sept 26: Bangladesh has protested to India over the alleged detention of 27 fishermen by Indian border guards and demanded their immediate release, officials said today. The Bangladeshi fishermen from the western Rajshahi area, bordering India's Maldah district, were fishing in the border river Padma on Tuesday morning when they were rounded up by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) patrol boats, an official of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) told reporters by telephone from Rajshahi.
Protest notes and messages were sent by local BDR officials to their counterparts across the border requesting the fishermen be released, said the official, who did not want to be named.
The BDR is awaiting a response to a request for an urgent "flag meeting" with the BSF to discuss and resolve the matter, he said. Bureau Report
