Colombo, Nov 27: Taking advantage of a limited period open sky policy offered by India, Srilankan Airlines is increasing its flights to Indian destinations and raising seat capacity by 28 per cent from December 1.
"Srilankan Airlines will add new flights to Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Trichy between December and February under the Indian open sky policy that will prevail during this period," the airline said in a statement.
From December 1, the Sri Lankan national carrier will operate seven flights a week between Colombo and New Delhi, up from six. Flights to Mumbai and Trichy will go up from four to five, the airline said.
Indian aviation authorities allowed only 4,500 seats a week for Sri Lankan Airlines to Indian destination, but with the limited open sky offer, the number goes up to 5,760, officials said.
Airline officials said India was offering the limited period open sky policy ahead of a complete opening up in line with the prime ministers of the two countries agreed recently.
Sri Lanka has already indicated it will allow private airlines from India to operate unlimited flights to the island to meet the rise in demand for airline seats between the two countries.
