Best-dressed socialite charged with shoplifting
Dallas, Sept 28: A Dallas socialite who earned a `best dressed` distinction from Vogue magazine has been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting about 1,200 poundsworth of designer goods from a posh department store.
Dallas police said on Friday that Brooke Stollenwerck Aldridge, 48, was arrested on September 15 at a Nieman Marcus department store in Dallas. The arrest report said Aldridge was suspected of stuffing items into her purse and trying to flee the store without paying.
Among the items that she is suspected of shoplifting were a pair of black pants valued at $485, a Hermes wallet valued at $1,250 (750 pounds) and a Kate Spade wallet valued at $120, according to police documents.
The arrest report said a security guard watching video monitors observed Aldridge trying to sneak the items out of the store in her purse and a shopping bag.
Aldridge has been charged with felony theft. She was released several hours after her arrest.
Aldridge could not be reached for comment. She is a fixture on the Dallas social scene and has spearheaded many charitable campaigns for causes such as AIDS research and promoting the Dallas Museum of Art.
In July 2002 she won a "best-dressed" distinction in a July 2002 Vogue article that profiled fashion leaders in Dallas, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. In the article Aldridge lamented how the rise of casual dress has caused gaps in her wardrobe.
"Increasingly, I'm either in my workout clothes or I'm very dressed up; I no longer seem to have just slacks and a nice shirt," Aldridge told the leading fashion magazine.
Nieman Marcus was not immediately available for comment. About two years ago, Aldridge turned heads at a charity event held at the Nieman Marcus' flagship department store in Dallas when she was named one of the most fashionable women attending the event.
