Washington, Nov 14: United States President George W. Bush has ordered Iraq's civilian administrator Paul Bremer to formulate a strategy to speed up the shift to self-rule in the warn-torn country. "We want the Iraqis to be more involved in the governance of their country. And so ambassador Bremer, with my instructions, is going back to talk to the governing council to develop a strategy," Bush told reporters at the white house.
Bush said he was interested to work on a plan with Bremer and the US-appointed Governing Council to encourage Iraqis to assume more power.
"Bremer talked to me about the Iraqis' desire to be more involved in the governance of their country. And that is a positive development because it is actually what we want," Bush said after two days of "urgent consultations" with the Iraqi civil administrator.
Bremer would report back to the white house after discussing the issue with the Governing Council.
In Florida, National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice, talking to reporters, indicated that US may speed up on self-rule, ahead of the United Nations December 15 deadline for presenting a timetable for drafting a constitution and holding elections.
"It is still important that the Iraqi people have a permanent constitution. It's still important that they have elections for a permanent government. Nothing has changed," Rice said.
"But what is also important is that we find ways to accelerate the transfer of authority to the Iraqi people," she added. Bureau Report
