Chennai, Aug 13: Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu today attacked the government over its decision to derecognise major unions and associations of state government employees
and teachers.
DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi, condemning the move, told the reporters here that it was an "anti-democratic act".
"The demands of employees can be taken to government only through such associations and unions and by withdrawing the recognition, employees have lost their rights," he said.
If DMK comes back to power, "All these injustices will be rectified", he claimed.
AICC Secretary G K Vasan in a statement here condemned the derecognition move and said it tantamounts to "taking away their basic rights". The government should have consulted leaders of opposition parties and trade unions before taking the step, he said.
President of the Tamil Nadu government employees association N L Sridharan condemned the move and appealed to the government to withdraw the derecognition order.
Acting tough on various trade unions and associations for going on strike on July 2, the Tamil Nadu government had yesterday derecognised all the 26 major unions and its affiliates, numbering over 200, with immediate effect, throughout the state.
