The BSP-BJP coalition government headed by Mayawati Saturday decided to seek a vote of confidence in the assembly on May 17, one week before the three-week deadline set to prove its majority on the floor of the House.
The state cabinet, which met here for the first time under the chairmanship of Mayawati who assumed office on Friday decided to recommend to Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri to convene the first session of the Uttar Pradesh legislature from May 15, according to an official communique issued on Saturday night. Shastri had asked Mayawati that she seek a confidence vote within three weeks after assuming office. The newly elected members would be administered the oath May 13 and 14 while the election of the assembly speaker will also take place on May 14. The Governor would address the joint session of the assembly on May 15, the communique said The debate on the motion of thanks to the governor for his address would take place from May 20 to 23 after which the motion would be put to vote. The Governor had asked Mayawati to prove her majority on the floor of the House within three weeks of being sworn in as Chief Minister of the state. Bureau Report
