the year and was beaten 6-4 3-6 7-6 (3) by Silvia Farina Elia
at the Eastbourne grass-court tournament yesterday.
Several other high-profile Americans had better luck than the 2000 Wimbledon champion. Jennifer Capriati reached the quarterfinals at Eastbourne, staging a late comeback to beat fellow American Amy Frazier 6-1 7-5.
There was also victory for defending champion Chanda Rubin of the United States. She swept past Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand 6-0 6-3. Fourth-seeded Slovak Daniela Hantuchova overcame a strong challenge from American Alexandra Stevenson to win 7-6 (3) 6-4.
"More than anything, I just think the conditions were frustrating", said Davenport, complaining about gusting wind.
"It wasn't a nice way to play tennis, because win or lose you don't feel like you've hit the ball well. But I fought hard to come back and had some chances, but she came up with some good serves".
"It's tough enough to play on grass without the wind to deal with as well. But I'm happy I got through a match without any problems with my foot".
