Chennai, June 09: A global leader in infusion therapy, B D India, today launched a state-of-the-art intravenous catheters for infusion therapy and needles with push button shielding technology for better patient comfort and to safeguard healthcare workers from accidental needle "stick" injuries. Launching the product at a press conference here, general manager for medical systems of B D (Becton Dickinson), Rakesh Kumar said the catheter material softens in blood stream by 75 per cent in just an hour resulting in less irritation to the vein and other cannula related complications.

Other features of the product are sharper needle for painless insertion and its "kink resistance," which prevents the catheter from bending, thus providing uncompromised fluid flow, he said.

He said on pressing a button at the base of the needle, it withdraws inside, reducing the risk of needle stick injuries to health workers and also to those collecting the used needles.
The company also came out with a sterile dressing having a unique high absorbing wound pad to keep the catheter insertion site dry and reduce the risk of bacterial growth.

A transparent window allows visual inspection of the key portion of the catheterized vein so that infections could be noted immediately, he said
