Beijing, Dec 24: China and Kazakhstan have signed a landmark 'good-neighbourly treaty of friendship and cooperation to step up bilateral ties and fight terrorism, separatism and extremism.
The treaty was signed by Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his Kazakh counterpart, Nursultan Nazarbayev here at the great hall of the people. Commenting on the treaty, Jiang said "It marked another important step for the two countries in maintaining regional peace and stability."
During talks with Nazarbayev, Jiang backed the smooth development of bilateral relations and both countries' co-operation within the framework of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO), media reports said today. Jiang said China appreciated the Kazakhstan government's consistent understanding and support on its position on combating the "East Turkistan" terrorist forces in China's north-western Xinjiang.
East Turkistan elements are trying to establish an independent state of east Turkistan in the oil-rich Xinjiang. China as well as the United Nations have proclaimed the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), one of the main separatist forces in Xinjiang, as a terrorist group. Jiang said SCO's top priority is to establish an anti-terrorism organisation. The SCO includes China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Nazarbayev said his country firmly supported the fighting of terrorism, separatism and extremism.
Referring to Sino-Kazakh relations, Jiang said the border issues between Kazakhstan and China have been settled, enabling mutual trust between the two countries.
