Russian cosmonaut Vladimir Dezhurov and US astronaut Frank Culbertson have begun a spacewalk to connect and test new equipment, Russian space officials said.
Dezhurov and Culbertson opened the hatch of Russia's Pirs module on the International Space Station at 3.11am (IST) on Nov 11, according to officials at Russian mission control center near Moscow.
During the six-hour spacewalk, Dezhurov and Culbertson were due to connect cables of the automatic approach and docking system and test the cargo port installed earlier on the Pirs module.
The two cosmonauts may even ride on the cargo crane, space officials quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency said, adding that the unorthodox method had first been employed to test a similar crane on the Mir space station.
This would be the Russo-US team's third spacewalk.
