New Delhi, Aug 04: In a bid to contain the gathering storm of dissent, Bihar Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Laloo Prasad Yadav will meet his party MP Mohammed Shahabuddin here today to resolve differences. Yadav has already left for Delhi with RJD national spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari, who is also Bihar's minister for excise and prohibition and shares a good relationship with Shahabuddin.

Shahabuddin - who is evading a Bihar police order to arrest him on an old kidnapping-murder charge - is reported to have boarded a train from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh for Delhi. R He is likely to attend the Parliament session as well.

"There are no differences between them. They will meet and end any trouble in the party followed by Shahabuddin's arrest order of arrest," said a senior RJD leader.

The perception that Yadav was behind Shahabuddin's arrest order last Wednesday had led to considerable unrest within the party.

Clearly Yadav felt threatened by the powerful MP, who claimed to enjoy the support of about 100 legislators.
More than any one else, Yadav knew the consequences of Shahabuddin's arrest. A large number of legislators and several ministers in Chief Minister Rabri Devi's cabinet openly questioned the decision to arrest him.

They also demanded action against state police chief DP Ojha for ordering the arrest.

Besides, Yadav could not afford to ignore Shahabuddin's increasing grip over Muslim community, which along with the Yadav caste forms the backbone of support for the RJD.

Equally, Shahabuddin knew that differences with Yadav, who has undisputed control of the party and the state, could cost him dearly despite his powerful clout.
A non-bailable warrant had been pending against the controversial politician for the last two years.

Shahabuddin and five others are the main accused in the kidnapping of Munna Chaudhary, a Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist (CPI-ML) supporter in 2001. He is said to have been murdered.

Shahabuddin was declared an absconder by the Siwan chief judicial magistrate Saturday during hearing case of Munna Choudhary kidnapping. His petition to stay the warrant was adjourned till August 7.

There are 38 cases, including the murder of former Jawaharlal Nehru University student union president Chandrashekhar, against Shahabuddin in different police stations in Bihar.

He was formally charged in 26 cases but acquitted in 14 because of lack of evidence. Ojha has ordered a retrial in nine of the 14 cases.
