French President Jacques Chirac said on Saturday he was not in favour of using special legal proceedings to prosecute suspected terrorists, as envisaged by the United States in its bid to quash the Al Qaeda network of Osama bin Laden.
Asked by reporters in Belgrade if suspected terrorists arrested in France would be extradited to the US, Chirac said, “We are not in favour of exceptional jurisdictions.”
“We think the law should be clear, known and applied to everyone,” Chirac told a news conference at the end of his two-day visit to Yugoslavia.
“We are in favour of terrorists or criminals being tried by the natural, normal, legitimate authorities, whatever the origin of their deeds,” Chirac said. Bureau Report
