The white ambassador car with red beacon lights, used by terrorists in on Thursday’s suicide attack within the Parliament complex, contained more than 20 kg of RDX which was deactivated by a bomb disposal squad of the National Security Guard (NSG).
''More than 20 kg of RDX were found in the car and the explosives deactivated by the NSG bomb disposal squad,'' said Mr Mahipathy, joint secretary (Parliamentary security). The car, bearing registration number DL 3C J 1527, was later taken to a special security zone for inspection, a senior police official said. It took an overnight operation by security personnel to sanitise the entire Parliament complex as the entire area and roads leading to it remained out of bounds till this morning personnel of bomb disposal squads, police and security forces scanned the complex for hours looking for any explosives that could have been left behind by the five terrorists who were killed in the heavy gunbattle with security forces. Sniffer dogs were also pressed into service. ''The entire complex could be sanitised only in the early hours today,'' Mr Mahipathy said.
The gates were opened amid heavy security arrangements around 0930 hrs, barely one-and-a-half hours before the two houses assembled.
Shortly after the attack, army columns had been deployed in and around the Parliament complex, North and South Blocks and residences of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and leader of the Opposition Sonia Gandhi.
The bodies of the five militants were taken to hospital and autopsy will be carried out on Friday.
Several forensic experts converged in the parliament complex on Thursday to pick up clues that could help the investigations. Though no organisation has claimed responsibility for the attack, the needle of suspicion is being pointed towards Pakistan-based terrorist outfits -- Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba.
The Jaish had claimed responsibility for a similar suicide attack on Jammu and Kashmir Assembly building in Srinagar on October 1, killing at least 29 people.
