Gwalior, June 15: Interstate criminal Dharamvir Khateek, who carried a reward of Rs 200,000 on his head, was shot dead today by a Jhansi police team in an encounter while his associate Pappu alias Umesh Tomar was slain this morning by Gwalior police.
''Khateek was hiding near Kumharpura Kua, within Nawababad police station area, with the intention of committing some crime. That was when he came face-to-face with a patrol,'' police superintendent S M Afzal told mediapersons. Meanwhile, Pappu, who carried a reward of Rs 15,000 on his head, was slain near the Shivpuri Link road at the foot of Kaisar Pahadi. He was accused of having killed a constable. Khateek emerged as an interstate criminal on July 26, 2001 when he slew cloth merchant Anurag Jain alias Aashu at the latter's shop in broad daylight. After that murder, Shivpuri's markets remained shut for three days and the traders declared a reward of Rs one lakh on the killer. More than a dozen cases of looting, murder, dacoity and extortion were lodged against the duo at Shivpuri, Indore, Gwalior and places in other states. Bureau Report
