Jakarta, Dec 03: Six Indonesian students suspected
of terrorist links will be held for questioning when they
arrive home after being deported by Pakistan, police said
today.
The six include Rusman Gunawan, the brother of
alleged top terrorist Hambali, considered al-Qaeda's pointman
in Asia and also former operations chief of Jemaah Islamiyah
(JI), which is blamed for the October Bali bombings that
killed 202 people and for a string of other deadly blasts.
"It is important for us to question them. We already
have the material which we will use as reference for their
questioning," said Sunarko Danu Ardanto, a national police
spokesman.
Ardanto said that under current anti-terror laws, police could detain them for up to four months before bringing them to court. He added that police would release them if they found no proof of terrorist activities.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Marty Natalegawa said yesterday that Pakistan had notified Jakarta of its plan to deport the students but that no date had yet been set.
