New Delhi, July 04: Taking a cue from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) today decided to write to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to appeal against the acquittal of the accused in the Best Bakery case.
A decision to this effect was taken at an emergency meeting of NCM chaired by S Tarlochan Singh.
The commission has decided to ask the state government to engage senior lawyers for this purpose and also "desired that the state should give equal importance to all criminal cases lodged after the riots which had taken place in the state last year,” it said in a press note.
"There should not be any disparity in the cases on account of Godhra incident and other incidents which happened in other parts of the state,” it said.
NCM has also decided to immediately have a meeting with Chief Justice of India and Union Law Minister to impress upon them for making some "special provisions" for speedy justice to be given to the minorities in courts, the note added.
NHRC chairman Justice A S Anand had said that the state government must appeal against the verdict.
