Canada is one of only two countries outside Asia to
report any SARS-related deaths. All of them have been
concentrated in the Toronto area, in Canada's most populated
Ontario province.
The nurse who died yesterday fell ill during Canada's first SARS outbreak in early March, according to a statement released by Ontario health authorities. A second wave of SARS cases followed in late May and early June. Today there are fewer than 20 active cases in Canada.
On July 14, when health officials announced that a 76-year-old woman had become Canada's 40th SARS victim, they said that seven SARS patients remained in critical or deteriorating condition.
At that date, Ontario had tallied a total of 375 probable and suspected SARS cases since the first SARS-linked death in the province, on march 5.
