Comic book heroes are sure-fire winners in Hollywood as proved by the phenomenal returns of ‘Spiderman’ and the two ‘X-Men’ blockbusters. So it’s no surprise that yet another popular mutant takes the leap from paper to celluloid. The big surprise with “The Hulk” may be that the unlikely director at the helm is acclaimed Taiwanese director, Ang Lee.
A rather unusual choice given that among his best known work is the Oscar-winning Jane Austen adaptation, “Sense And Sensibility”. But then, his resume also includes another Oscar triumph, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” whose gravity defying antics hit closer home to superhero stunts.
In essence, “The Hulk” can be described as a futuristic “Dr Jekyll And Mr. Hide”, with its dual personality concept. A mild-mannered scientist transforms into a green monster, every time anger strikes.
Heading the starcast is a relatively unknown Eric Bana in the title role, with the beautiful Jennifer Connelly, Oscar winner for “Beautiful Mind” playing his love interest. Nick Nolte steps in as his father with a dark secret.
