Tehran, Aug 24: Iranian President Mohammad Khatami wants a British apology for the arrest of Tehran's former ambassador in Buenos Aires on an international arrest warrant from Argentina, state radio reported today.
"I hope that the British government will swiftly go back on this incorrect action and apologise," the radio quoted the reformist President as saying of Hadi Soleimanpour's detention in Durham, northeast England, on suspicion of involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural centre.
"The Islamic Republic will never let this ugly and lying conspiracy take place against Iran and will follow the case closely," Khatami said.
Iran already announced yesterday that it was imposing economic sanctions against Argentina over the affair.
