Brussels, Apr 12: European Union and Iranian officials have wrapped up the second round of a political dialogue here with a commitment to deepen cooperation at the bilateral, regional and international level. "We could not have had a better climate and more fruitful talks than what we had this time," Iranian diplomatic sources said yesterday.
The two sides expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved during economic, political and cultural negotiations between Tehran and Brussels, said the sources. Ibrahim Rahimpour, director general of West European desk in the Iranian foreign ministry, led the Iranian delegation, while the political director in the Greek foreign ministry, Ilias Klis, headed the EU side.
Ways to promote regional and international cooperation between the 15-member European bloc and the Islamic republic and strengthening ties between the European Parliament and Iran's Majlis were discussed on Thursday evening during the meeting. The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Iraq. Stressing on the integrity of Iraq, Iranian side supported non-interference of other countries in the administration of the war-torn country and opined that Iraq's future must be determined by Iraqis alone and under UN supervision.
The two sides agreed to hold the third round of the political dialogue in Tehran under the current Greek EU presidency.
The first round of the political dialogue was held in Tehran in December. Meanwhile, the third session of negotiations on a trade and cooperation agreement between the EU and Iran ended in Brussels Wednesday evening with both sides expressing satisfaction at the outcome of the two-day talks.
Issues covered included cooperation against drug trafficking, money laundering, illegal migration, science and technology and cultural cooperation between the 15-member European bloc and the Islamic republic.
