Jammu, June 18: Over 40,000 pilgrims have been registered for the Amarnath Yatra till today, barely three days since the registration for it began, as against a target of 1.12 lakh pilgrims set this year. "The shrine board has fixed 1.12 lakh target for registration of pilgrims this year," Abdul Hamid, manager, Jammu and Kashmir Bank told media persons today.

He said an additional quota of ten thousand pilgrims has been arranged in the event of the target exceeding. J&K Bank, which is the nodal agency for registration of pilgrims for the yatra, has so far registered 41,723 pilgrims. As many as 23,557 pilgrims were registered on June 16, the first day of commencement of registration across the country, Hamid said.

He said J&K Bank has opened 84 registration centres, seven of them in J&K for pilgrims across country.

A total of 1.25 lakh pilgrims are scheduled to perform darshan at the cave shrine of Amarnath in Lidder Valley in Phalgam Hills (Anantnag) in south kashmir this year, the officials said. A record number of 1,73334 pilgrims visited the shrine in 2000 while last year 1,10793 pilgrims made it.

This year two routes, Baltal (Sonamargh) besides the main route from Phalgam-Chandanwari have been thrown open to the pilgrims, tourism department officials said.

Besides 3500 pilgrims would be allowed to trek the route of cave shrine of Amarnath from Jammu each day, they said.

In Jammu, 26 places have been demarcated with full security for housing pilgrims during the month-long yatra starting from July 12 this year, they said.
