Baghdad, Nov 19: Iraq today underlined its readiness to cooperate with the new UN arms inspections now being set up, but voiced concern that the United States was still
preparing to attack.
"Iraq will honour its commitments under the United Nations charter and international law and will not change until resistance is crowned with victory," the ruling Baath party daily Ath-Thawra said.
By agreeing to UN disarmament resolution 1441 and yesterday's return of inspectors after four years, Iraq wants "to prove ... That it has no weapons of mass destruction and that it has not produced any in their absence," the paper said.
Iraq "will resist until this evil (US) administration is sure of the truth," said al-Iraq newspaper, adding that it would then demand the end of sanctions which have been in force since 1990.
"Peace is possible if the inspectors behave in an impartial and honest way during their mission in Iraq," government daily al-Jumhuriya said.
But ath-Thawra, like the rest of the official press, warned against true US intentions.
"The evil US administration and its Zionist ally have this time chosen to carry out their aggressive plans under the cover of the international body," it said.
Al-Iraq saw "an attack under the pretext of the danger from weapons" of mass destruction which Washington insists Iraq still possesses.
