Buenos Aires, July 04: Celebrations in Argentina turned to looting and violence after Boca Juniors beat defending champions Santos of Brazil 3-1 to win South America's Libertadores Cup.
The blue and yellow colours of Boca Juniors flooded the streets of Buenos Aires on Wednesday (July 02) as Argentines celebrated their team's championship 3-1 win over Brazilian club Santos in the South American Libertadores Cup.
Deafening cheers filled many bars as Boca, now a five-time Libertadores champion, took an early lead. Meanwhile outside, fans wearing Boca baseball hats and jerseys waved banners and honked horns late into the night.
In Mar del Plata (some 400 kilometres south of Buenos Aires), however, the celebrations turned violent as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse looters and rock-throwers.
Although police arrested several people, no injuries were reported.
