Rain interrupted play twice in the post-lunch session on the fourth day of the third and final cricket Test between India and South Africa in Centurian on Monday. India were 115 for 1 in their second innings, with Shiv Sunder Das batting on 48 and Rahul Dravid on 11 when rains first forced the break. Then after about 25 minutes of play, more showers and poor light ensured another unscheduled break.
The score at this stage was 118 for 2, with the lone batsman out being Das. He was bowled by captain Shaun Pollock without adding any more runs to his score. Sachin Tendulkar (2) was the new batsman in, joining Dravid, unbeaten on 11 when play was finally called off for the fourth day. The visitors now trail South Africa by 216 runs.
Fighting with their backs to the wall, India survived the first session of the fourth morning, reaching 104 for 1 by lunch after having conceded a mammoth 334-run first innings lead to South Africa.
After the South Africans declared their first innings at their overnight 566 for 8, the Indians did well in keeping their wickets intact for most of the first session. Openers Shiv Sunder Das and Connor Williams batted confidently and were not bogged down by the huge task at their hand. Unlike in the first innings when they were too cautious, both Das and Williams scored freely and put on 92 runs for the opening wicket before the Baroda left-hander snicked a Lance Klusener delivery for a regulation catch to Jacques Kallis at second slip. Williams made a solid 42.
India's hopes of saving the 'Test' now rests on Tendulkar, Dravid and the ever unpredictable showers. Bureau Report
