Chandigarh, June 30: Results of about 10,000 panchayats out of 12337 in Punjab which went to polls yesterday have been declared, state Election Commission sources said here today.
Since the elections are contested on non-party lines it is difficult to say which party has emerged victorious, the sources said.
A total of 2,134 sarpanches and 11,200 panches were elected unopposed, the sources said, adding the results had been declared by the returning officers at the village level. Official results would reach the election office here later after their compilation by respective deputy commissioners.
Around 80 per cent of 1.30 crore voters had cast their ballot during the polling which left two people killed.
Polling to 15 village panchayats was postponed till July 13 due to detection of various irregularities in voters list.
An associate of Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal, Gurdas Kaur lost at his native village in Muktsar district to Jaswinder Kaur, who is also related to Badals, but is stated to be an arch rival supported by the Congress.
Meanwhile, Congress claimed that party supported nominees have won in majority of the places while Parkash Singh Badal described the elections as a "blatant murder of democracy" marred by deletion of voters and bogus voting.
