In the sensational Anjanabai Gavit case, a local court on Wednesday sentenced to death two sisters who killed several infants in the nineties after kidnapping them from various places in Maharashtra to commit thefts. The verdict was pronounced in a jam-packed courtroom by the sessions judge G L Yedke who ordered that Renuka Kiran Shinde (27) and Seema Mohan Gavit (25) shall be hanged till death.
The sisters were on June 22 convicted by the court but the judge had reserved his order until Wednesday on the quantum of sentence. The court, however, set free Kiran Shinde, husband of Renuka, who had turned approver. Ujjwal Nikam, public prosecutor, pressed for death sentence saying that it was the rarest of the rare case.
Defence lawyer Manik Mulik said the accused would prefer an appeal before the high court. The main accused Anjanabai Gavit passed away before the trial began. Renuka and Seema are her daughters.
The accused had kidnapped 13 infants from various parts of the state. Nine kids were killed by them, while four others were abandoned at different places because they were found to be unfit for the gang.
Their modus operandi was to abduct children from public places such as gardens and temples and soon thereafter migrate to another place to commit thefts there. When they were caught, the Gavit family threw children on the ground to gain the sympathy of people. The children were kidnapped between June 1990 and October 1996 and killed by banging their heads against walls or hard objects.
