Agartala, Oct 23: Five policemen were among eight persons injured when a mob clashed with the cops over demolition of a Kali temple at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district forcing the police to open fire in air.
Police said today that hundreds of people laid siege around the office of the sub-divisional magistrate after they came to know that the 40-year-old Kali temple had been demolished and demanded its reconstruction.
Senior police officials rushed to the SDM office and the villagers attacked the policemen. Amid stone pelting by the mob, the police opened fire in the air to disperse the mob, which was trying to break into the office of the SDM, police said.
Five policemen and three villagers were injured in the clash. Senior officials including District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police later held a meeting with the residents and members of the temple committee and an assurance was given that the temple would be constructed.
Official sources said the sub-divisional administration had issued notice recently to the temple authority to shift the shrine to another place as the land, owned by the government, was required for construction of SDM office. Senior officials including District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police later held a meeting with the residents and members of the temple committee and an assurance was given that the temple would be constructed.
