New Delhi, May 26: In an attempt to infuse a sense of accountability in government-run schools in Delhi, show cause notices would be issued to the institutions which performed badly in the recent standard X and XII examinations, city education minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said here today. Although impressed by the overall improvement in results of government schools, Chauhan told reporters here that those with a poor pass percentage despite all the facilities provided by the government will be asked to explain the reasons for it.

Stating that the show cause notices would be issued within a week to the principals of such schools, he said based on the explanations given, "sternest action" would be taken. On the overall performance of government schools in Delhi, the minister said an improvement had been witnessed over the last year and as compared to that of other states.

He pointed out that while overall percentage of CBSE results had declined by about two percent, the result of government schools had increased considerably from 71.23 percent last year to 77.09 percent this time in standard XII examinations and from about 45 percent last year to 49 percent this year in standard X examinations.

Chauhan attributed the good show of government schools to regular inspections and surprise visits by officials and himself besides all help needed by these institutions. Efforts are on to fill in the five percent vacancy in government schools this year, he said, adding 53 more schools would also be built.
