Manila, Aug 13: At least 11 people died and more than 400 were evacuated as heavy rains and a waterspout triggered mudslides, damaged houses and washed out roads in the northern and central Philippines, officials said today.
At least eight people were killed in a landslide triggered by a waterspout that dumped seawater on land in the central province of Negros oriental, said civil defense office information officer Mina Marasigan. Four were still missing and two were injured in the incident yesterday, she said.
A waterspout is a whirling funnel-shaped column of air full of spray, usually occurring in tropical areas.
Three more people died from electrocution today as a result of damage inflicted by flooding in Rizal province south of Manila, she said. Water levels in parts of Taytay town, in Rizal, reached as high as three meters, Marasigan said.
Tropical depression Milenyo, carrying heavy rains and winds of up to 55 kph, also flooded several streets in Manila and forced authorities to close all schools for the day. Several vehicles were abandoned in waist-deep water around the capital.

A civil defense office press release said rising water forced 409 people to flee their homes in the central Philippines yesterday, and the number was likely to rise as the storm moved up the archipelago.

The authorities said four other minor landslides in the central Philippines washed out some roads. All boat trips to the island province of Catanduanes were suspended yesterday and early today.
